Why edibles take longer

Smoke hits in minutes. An edible can take two hours. Here's what's happening in between, and how to plan for it.

The most common edible mistake has nothing to do with how much you take first. It’s taking more because the first one “isn’t working yet.”

The long way around

When you inhale cannabis, cannabinoids reach the bloodstream through the lungs within minutes. When you eat it, they travel through digestion first, and then through the liver.

In the liver, THC is converted into a compound called 11-hydroxy-THC. That extra step is a big part of why edibles take longer to arrive and can feel different, and often longer-lasting, than smoking.
